My 70th birthday party

« on: January 27, 2010, 02:27:32 PM »

I baked some apples for last night's supper dessert. They were good.
3 Granny Smith apples (med to lrg)
3 tsp Splenda or brown sugar if you can have sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp cloves
3 tsp raisens
3 tsp chopped walnuts
Core the apples leaving the bottom of apple intact
Mix other ingredients together and spoon into hole in apples.
Bake uncovered in 350 oven for about 35 mins depending on the size of the apples. Yummy chef

My Uncle Don loves baked apples, but instead of putting all that other stuff down the hole, he just puts peanut butter down the hole (apples & peanut butter) and bakes accordingly.

I like apples and peanut butter together. I usually slice them and dip into the pb. Love it! I love apples any way you fix them especially just sliced and eaten plain.

I love apples too....they just don't like me back.  Two or three wedges is all I can tolerate these days....they make my stomach hurt, and give me heartburn.  Bananas used to give me terrible indigestion/heartburn.  My grandmother told me to sprinkle a little salt on them first, and that really worked.  Now I can have bananas all day and they don't bother me.  That trick hasn't worked with apples.

The salt thing would never work with me.  no-no I NEVER put salt on anything. If it's cooked in, that's fine, but I never salt anything at the table. I don't like the taste of salt laying on top of food.

I don't like a lot of salt either. My son puts salt on melon. Now that is just gross. If it is sweet, I want it to be sweet, not salty.

Actually salt will make it taste a little more sweet...my parents have done that for years, especially on watermelon.  I only do it now if it doesn't have a really sweet taste to it naturally.

The salt definitly enhances the sweetness of whatever fruit your eating.  As long as you don't DOUSE it.  I use just a light sprinkle over the entire banana and it works every time!

YES pepper on cantaloupe is good.   I can't have salt because of health so I use pepper but I have to be careful not to eat too much.   I'm not an apple fan but I do like melons.

Oh wow! Cantaloupe is one of my favorite fruits and we eat a lot of it in season. I bought one last week (out of season)and I believe it was the sweetest one we have ever had. Probably came from S America.  But I want my cantaloupe just by itself. Cantaloupe is a good healthy choice too.

I never been a melon fan.  When I was young, I loved watermelon, but it just doesn't taste like it used to.  They're not as sweet.  I think it's the new "seedless" ones!

But, who knows....I might enjoy all manner of melon these days, in my condition.  I should try it!

thumbs up I too like pepper on cantaloupe! I also put salt on watermelon and apples in my younger days. Raw potato with salt and pepper was always a treat when Mom was peeling them for supper. I very rarely salt like that anymore to help cut back on salt intake. Mmmmmm, my mouth is watering just thinking about all those yummy salted treats!
Back to baked apples....thanks for the recipe...might have to make them this weekend!!
