God is good, ALL of the time!

« on: April 06, 2010, 12:44:37 PM »

My granddaughter is ADHD.  Hmmm... I hate that term.  But she is on meds... another thing I hate.  Mom does not allow her to have sugar because it is like a bad drug for her.  So my question is...

What is the alternative candy that we can give our granddaughter for Christmas and different gift times?  Since every school party and occasion that is what people seem to give.  Are there sugarless candies that are not hard candies?  I don't want her to choke.

All suggestions are welcome!

(and excuse poor grammar... trying to hurry... )

Yes, you can get sugar-free/diabetic candies that are not hard candies. You don't say how old your granddaughter is, but I would tend to focus on giving her non-food items, such as stickers, crayons, coloring books, dress-up jewelry, etc.

Yes there is lots of sugar free chocolate out there too.  I know there are sugar free Jelly Bellys too, I have seen them at Target.
Side note: Sugar free candy/chocolate when eaten in excess can cause a laxative effect so even the Jelly Bellys would only be able to be eaten like dozen in a day and maybe 2 pieces max of the chocolate.

Diney - I was just getting ready to say that warning myself.  I found out the hard way!!  blush

When my son (not ADHD, but overweight) wanted candy, I used to give him sugarless bubblegum.  He liked that even better than candy.

Me too Karen, found out the hard way that is.  Before they had the brand name sugar free chocolate in Canada, my cousin and I ate a bag of Turtles driving over the bridge, probably about 6 pieces each.  I phoned her later and asked her how she was feeling because I had been spending my whole day in the bathroom and she said that her stomach had just been really gurgling until she said suddenly "i gotta go!", you can guess what happened. lol

Our school has a no sugar treat policy for when the kids bring treats to school to share (sugar cannot be listed as one of the first 2 ingrediants and homemade treats aren't accepted).  So, the kids end up trading small toys and trinkets or bags of pretzels, sugar free bubble gum (as was already suggested) etc.   It is a little frustrating b/c it is way easier to buy cupcakes and cookies for treats, but you can find things. We can bring in ice cream treats--I haven't really figured out how that passes the "healthy" test, but it does, so I will not argue.  Most parents send in apples, grapes, cheese sticks, pretzels and crackers.  No pnut better b/c we have a few kids in our school w/severe allergy and they aren't allowed to tell anyone who it is, so no one can bring in pnut butter.

My granddaughter is 8.  And I so wish they would have non-sugar treats at schools, church, etc.  But... she always feels left out.  She has three siblings and they always bring home neat things when Valentines, Easter, Christmas roll around.

I will try some of the suggestions though.   Thank you ladies!
