My 70th birthday party

« on: December 02, 2010, 01:40:09 PM »

Well, it's about time to start the Christmas baking and I will start Saturday by making some of my pumpkin breads and put them in the freezer. I will pull them out later and put the glaze on them. I make a lot of them and give as gifts. To the 3 girls that my hubby works with in the barber/style shop, I am giving a loaf of pumpkin bread and one of our cookbooks. One of them is pretty young and she doesn't cook so maybe this will inspire her. What do the rest of you usually cook for Christmas in the form of goodies. I will also make cookies and pies and of course the Reverse Oreo bites that we all love.

I don't actually BAKE a lot during the holidays, but I usually made fudge, pumpkin bread, & hand-dipped pretzels in almond bark topped with red or green sprinkles. I also do take the little square pretzels, put a Hershey kiss on each one, bake on low for 5-10 min. & then put an M&M on each one as soon as they come out of the oven. Easy peasy--the hardest part is unwrapping all those kisses!

I may make some date nut bread-drool.  I do like making peanut brittal (my husband calls it peanut brutal!)

I make those too.  My husband's co-worker gave him some, along with the recipe and she called them Belly-Buttons.  They have been added to my annual list of MUST bake cookies along with the Reverse Oreos.  Other than cookies I don't bake much else, but we do have some things that I make to have in the house during the week between Christmas and New Years.  We don't eat "normal" meals that week.  I bake a turkey and ham and also do meatballs and wings, and we eat a lot of dips (the round bread bowl w/dill dip), crackers and cheese, crab dip, homemade macaroni & cheese, a veggie tray - those kinds of things.  (Some of those things I save for New Year's Eve and we also steam some shrimp).  This year I will cut back and try to "make over" the recipes to make them healthier.  My son has lost a lot of weight (50 pounds) and I want to keep it that way - I'm very proud of him.  I certainly don't need to be eating a lot of it either.  It's that constant battle that I go through every year - I can't imagine Christmas without homemade cookies and other treats I only make during the holidays, and of course my family is insisting that I bake cookies this year.  I just hope I'm not paying the price in January.   uhh

I like to bake batches and batches of cookies and treats, but I'm just not sure if I will be able to do that this year. I hope so. Last year I have my husband take a basket of them to our pastors (work, friends and actual pastor). I loved when my dad would get tasty treats from parishioners. He didn't always share them, though!  Contemplating

LOL, I always bake our family secret recipe for our pastor and give them to him in the office, he never even tells his wife he has them!  This year we did more of a gift exchange so I gave them to him (2 dozen), but his wife was not in the room when he got them so he hid them.  My mom told on him when she came back and she said 'A whole tin!, I have only seen one at a time!" lol.

Karen, we are the same, we just eat the rich stuff we typically never get to eat the rest of the year.  We will have leftover turkey and ham from my mom this year.  We are going to her house Christmas and Boxing Day so I will be making mac and cheese with ham.  MMMM. lots of dips etc.
