Ok, we've all done something stupid in the kitchen. Last thing I did was I was trying to make Ham & String Beans for my hubby and accidentally put in TURKEY broth instead of HAM broth that I had in the freezer. He said it was  yuck, so it got tossed in the trash.

A lady I know didn't know the difference between a CLOVE of garlic and a BULB of garlic. Recipe called for 3 CLOVES of garlic. Guess what she did... :faint: paper bag

What have you done dumb in the kitchen?

Duet 13:4 You shall serve Him and hold fast to Him

I just recently made a cucumber relish in which I put everything together and read later that I was supposed to soak the cucumbers, carrots and onion in salt FIRST. So I ended up rinsing it all off (including the 4 cups of sugar) and soaking the vegetables the right way.  Even though I made the mess, it ended up tasting pretty good.  Here is the recipe

7 C. chopped cucumbers (you can leave the skins on, it adds more color)
1 1/2 C. chopped carrots
1 1/2 C. chopped onion ( I used onion greens for more color)
1/2 C. Salt

Combine the above ingredients and soak for 2 hours.
Rinse and drain the mixture.

To the mixture add:
4 C. Sugar
2 C. White Vinegar
1 Tbsp. Mustard Seed
1 T. Celery Seed

Boil for 20 minutes and fill pint jars.
Water bath for 20 minutes (although I do like I do with my jellys, I seal them and then turn them upside down and they seal themselves. Between the heat of the relish, jar, and lid it is hot enough to seal itself.

Maybe not so much a faux pas, but my mother laughs about it, to this day.

I had never really cooked much on my own, when I got married.  So, on our first Thanksgiving, I decided I wanted to host it at our house.  Had never even "handled" a turkey before.  I always cooked boneless, skinless chicken breasts.  The less actualy touching of the meat I have to do, the better.

So, I had this huge bird in my sink.  I called my mother on the phone and said "ok....I've got the turkey....what do I do?"  She said, "well, unwrap it, reach inside and pull out the bag with the giblets."  I said "Hang on a second.....I gotta get my kitchen gloves on!"  There was no way I going to put my hand inside a turkey with out LONG SLEEVED gloves!  My mother laughed so hard she almost dropped the phone.

Anyway.....everything turned out beautifully.  It was a delicious turkey and we all had full, happy bellies afterward!

Just a little---"I'll never live this down" moment.  One year at Valentines's day I was baking the premade valentine cookies and I didn't set the timer and forgot that they were in the oven.  I burnt them.  My dd was 3.  She is 7 and still reminds me that Dad needs to bake the Valentine cookies.  But it is OK that I bake cookies any other time, but she reminds me that  I will burn the Valentine cookies.

I have tried twice to make lemon pie from scratch.   My hubby has asked I never do it again.   The first time I cooked the eggs when I added the hot mixture but thought oh well he will never notice.  HE NOTICED.   Second time the filling all ran out on the first cut.   Oh well both times they looked nice.   Now it is graham cracker crust, canned pie filling and cool whip.   Can't win them all.

Oh, so many things!  But the main thing I do is burn myself.  I swear I am about an idiot when it comes to grabbing hot things w/o a hot pad.  I've burned all my fingertips trying to move a glass pie pan out of the way shortly after removing from the oven.  OUCH!
Or how about putting a hot glass dish in the dishwater and having it shatter immediately. I've done that one too.  Oy!

What a great thread.

I'm sure I have more, but the first thing that comes to mind is when my husband and I were first married. We're both Italians (part), and him coming from a strong Italian heritage, I wanted to make him a nice spaghetti dinner. So I boiled about 3 pounds of spaghetti in our little pot and ended up with a huge pot of noodle glue.

I think my best was when I made Angel Biscuits for the first time.  I wasn't reading the recipe very good and used a quart of buttermilk instead of 1/2 quart.  I had to double all the other ingredients.  The recipe makes a HUGE batch anyway so we had a LOT of angel biscuits!!  Whaaaaat

I think the funniest is the first time I really baked something when I was a kid.  I was going to make peanut butter cookies and would not let my mom help.  Well I had all the dough mixed together and it looked great so I was ready for my mom to help me with putting them on the sheet and in the oven.  My mom tasted a bit of the dough and she said "ugh, Nadine these are really salty!! How much salt did you put in?" Me being my snotty self, said "1/2 CUP just like the recipe said!!", well we didn't have cookies that day.  I had mostly done things like rice krispie squares up until that point.

electric mixer = big mess! I'm not allowed to use our electric mixer on anything except cake batter and cookie dough. Anytime I try to whip frosting it ends up all over the kitchen, because I always inadvertently let go of the icing tub. Same thing with mashed potatoes. I'm still cleaning green frosting out of places from Easter.
